India! Images and Photographs From the Subcontinent

What collection of images of India would be complete without the Taj Mahal in Agra? This image seems to be a painting or possibly a postcard.

This large flock of ducks seems to be having a meeting, perhaps figuring out the safest path across the street, one of the busiest in Bangalore, India.

This ferris wheel sits empty in Munnar, India on a beautiful summer day. The photographer said that the carnival was at a hilltop station that had few tourists. Nearby bulldozers were destroying entire hotels and resorts that developers had built illegally. Building hotels on land you don't own? That's optimism.

Elephants at the temple in Kanchipuram, India are beautifully decorated and are believed to bless visitors. We like this image so much we regret not being Elephant Nine!

This Apatani woman was found at the Myoko Festival in Arunachal. The festival deals with agriculture and rebirth and features the sacrifice of pigs.

Champakara Boat Race in Kerala has boats that resemble the boats racers use in contests in the northeast United States. Except here they hold so many rowers that everybody must make the team.

At 123 feet tall this statue of Shiva the Destroyer is the tallest in the world. It is found in Mangalore, India. Notice the people on the stairs than imagine how large even the statue of the cobra on his right leg must be. Scaffolding surrounds one of the left arms as lighting struck the statue and it is being repaired.

This lady was photographed in the market at Ravangla, India, and the photographer made mention of the umbrella she holds over her head to protect against the sun. I'm much more intruiged by the fancy nose ring.

At Lord Murguran's temple near Madurai, India the monkeys think nothing of sharing a bottle of cool water with their human cousins.

An Indian beauty enjoying a day at a festival.

Driving near Kerala in southern India this rear fanged snake was spotted crossing the road. What a comical yet scary photograph.

Terrifying stairs with no railing at Lakshmi Naryan Temple in Orchha. At the top of the scary stairs the photographer encountered a hornet's nest and had to make a hasty retreat. Watch where you put your feet when running down rail-less stairs pursued by angry hornets!

Taken at Muyyam Muchilottu Bhagavathy Temple (what a mouthful!) this Theyyam seems to be a festival of highly costumed men dancing in a feminine manner.

Colorful and well composed, this image of women waiting at a festival in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, India to see the Maharaja has been very popular, appearing on calenders, websites, even in books. Now it is on Robot Nine!
