Matchstick Model Of North Sea Oil Rig Made From 4 Million Matchsticks!

David Reynolds of Southampton, England has spent the last 15 years of his life building a miniature of exacting detail of an oil rig, the Brent Bravo, that he once worked on.
Out of matches.

4 million matches!

Where did Reynolds find the time?
"Most people watch about six or seven hours of television in the evening, you multiple that by seven, that's 40 hours a week.
Whereas at the end of 40 hours work on the model I have something to show for it."
I would sure miss Two and a Half Men, though!

The 4 million matchsticks is a redord, beating the old standing by half a million matches!

His wife Julie is not so impressed.
"I am absolutely sick to death at the sight of a matchstick but I think there is still
more to come unfortunately," she says.
"more to come"? Life rafts? Icebergs?

"But at least I know where he is and what he's doing, so I'd rather
have him there than down the pub."
Wonder how the cost of 4 million matches compares to beer?

The model, though a miniature, is huge, and had to be made in 14 parts.
"Early this year I was thinking of breaking it up because it took up two bedrooms,
the loft, two sheds and half my garage."
Perhaps Julie should have sent him to the pub a few years back.

We do think it is cool and incredibly detailed. If it were in a museum here we would go see it.

Luckily the model has found a temporary home at Bursledon Brickworks Museum.

Hopefully it will find a permanent home to be displayed. Remember this if you are ever going to make a huge-ass model.

Make the Titanic ship in matchsticks.

People find oil rigs kind of dull but that damn ship just won't go away.
